Basic singing technique is the same, irrespective of the origin of the song or the tradition of the singer. Breathing, support for the voice, posture and articulation, as well as musicality, all contribute to the quality of the performance and to the singer's ability to communicate the message of the song.
Singers who would like to participate in the workshops will probably be required to learn two songs by heart. The teaching staff and students then have material to work with. The precise details of the programme will be decided once it is known how many singers will participate, but generally the daily timetable will revolve around a two hour session each morning and afternoon.
During the course, there will be opportunities to attend the evening ceilidhs at Smaull, where the music staff and the “singers of Smaull” entertain each other with a combination of professional recitals, folk songs, songs from the shows and light-hearted compositions. In addition, it is hoped that the Islay singers will join the singers of Smaull for one or two ensemble items. Those who wish may have the opportunity to perform at the end-of-course concert on Friday 7th August at their option and if it fits with the programme.
The Choral Workshop will be a one-day event, probably on Saturday 1st August. It will be conducted by Mary Hill, Chief Coach at the Royal Academy of Music. This workshop will focus on the key elements of choral singing, as well as singing technique.
The course is open to anyone, irrespective of age. Previous experience is not essential but a desire to improve your singing will help! Participants should have a couple of songs prepared which they know by heart. The venue is likely to be the Columba Centre, Bowmore, and the cost will be no more than £80. per student for the five-day course.
