Introduction to Smaull Song

For the fifth successive year, in 2009 the SMAULL SONG singing course will be held at Smaull on the Isle of Islay in the Inner Hebrides. The course provides an opportunity for singers to enjoy making music, to improve their vocal and presentational skills and to expand their repertoire whilst relaxing in the exceptional surroundings of this beautiful island.  Participants are made welcome as the guests of Philip and Briar Maxwell, who live at Smaull.

On the music staff for 2009, we welcome Russell Smythe. Russell has sung in all the major British houses, throughout Europe, in North America, Israel and Japan. He teaches and lectures at the Royal College of Music, London, and gives workshops in Britain and abroad.
Returning for the third year is Richard Jackson, eminent recitalist and specialist in German, French and English song, along with opera coach Mary Hill and vocal coaches Sheila McGrow and Paschal Allen.

The course is intensive and challenging, and involves daily morning and evening workshops with the vocal coaches and Mary Hill, and masterclasses with Richard Jackson. Singers perform solo and ensemble pieces at a public concert for the Islay community at the end of the week. The repertoire, which will include works from both song and opera on a particular theme, is normally chosen after the auditions. A Teacher of The Alexander Technique is on hand during the course to provide lessons if requested, as an optional extra.

Afternoons are free for participants to choose from a range of Islay delights. The island has rich wildlife (Smaull is located within an RSPB  reserve), a famous golf course, wild beaches and spectacular sea-cliff scenery only a short walk from Smaull farmhouse. Also available locally are fishing, horse-riding, archaeological sites and eight whisky distilleries to visit! Evenings may include more informal singing and other ceilidh-type activities.

A particular feature of the course is the level and quality of individual attention available. The relatively small student-to-staff ratio, with a maximum of twelve singers, and the professionalism and experience of the musical staff mean that participants receive an exceptional training during the week. This, combined with the Highland hospitality and house party atmosphere at Smaull contribute to a unique experience.
